Wada Choji Shoten

about

For 47 consecutive years since its founding, Wada Choji Shoten has paid the highest price for tea leaves from Ryogauchi in Shizuoka City. We specialize in tea from the Abeoku and Ryogauchi districts, with Ryogauchi at the heart of what we do.

We work with 10 to 15 contracted growers. Every leaf we source is roasted in-house, still over charcoal — a method almost no shop practices anymore. From sourcing to roasting to blending, we handle everything ourselves. That's simply how this shop works.

Our range is built on traditional cultivars, alongside newer varieties known for their aroma and sweetness. Each is finished on its own to bring out its character, then blended to suit each customer's taste.

We Don’t Choose Tea. We Choose the People Behind It.

When it comes to sourcing, we live by my grandfather's words: choose the person, not just the tea. Of course we look closely at the leaf itself, but what matters more is who grew it — we buy on trust. We know all 10 to 15 of our contracted growers by name and by face. We visit them in person and talk with them directly. We're not hunting for the cheapest tea; we're building relationships that lead growers to make tea they're genuinely proud of. That's our approach.

Shizuoka tea is known for its beautiful appearance, and a beautifully shaped leaf is proof of careful, patient rolling. Good leaves unfurl effortlessly the moment hot water touches them, becoming great tea almost on their own. Sometimes we decide to buy based on appearance alone, before we've even caught the aroma. As for color, we don't chase the vivid green most people expect — Ryogauchi tea has its own signature koganeiro, a golden amber hue. For us, aroma and flavor balance matter more than color.

We build our range around traditional cultivars, but we're equally committed to newer varieties known for their sweetness and vibrant aroma. Rather than blending a new cultivar's character away, we finish it on its own to let that character shine, then blend to match what each customer is looking for. We call this "the art of the blend."

To Tea Lovers Around the World

A Message from the Maker

Please don't assume what's listed here is everything we have. If there's a flavor or aroma you truly love, just ask — we're happy to talk it through. Rather than pushing any one product, we want to be a tea shop that offers choices tailored to what you actually enjoy.

Our charcoal-roasted tea, for example, carries a sweet aroma reminiscent of marron glacé. It pairs beautifully with buttery Western pastries, and we're always glad to suggest combinations. Tea doesn't have to be reserved for special occasions — we'd be delighted if you found a place for this gentle sweetness in your everyday moments.
